Extracting barcodes from documents

When configuring your XBOUND process, you can use an Extract Barcodes step to extract barcodes and add them to the media as MediumBarcode records.

To configure barcode extraction

  1. Using the XBOUND Management Center, open a console containing the Process Designer.

  2. Under Process Navigation, click the desired process.

  3. In the Process area, click Process Design:

  4. Add an Extract Barcodes process step.

  5. Double-click the process step to access the settings.

  6. Select the barcode types to include (see Supported barcodes).

Note: Patchcode and Pharmacode barcodes cannot be detected at the same time as other barcodes but must be configured as separate steps.

  7. Select one of these options:

    • Add barcode – The recognized barcodes are added to the medium.

    • Delete existing barcodes – All previous barcodes existing on the medium are removed. Then newly recognized barcodes are added to the medium.

    • Add if value not available – Only those barcodes are added that do not have an unambiguous value.

    • Add if value and type not available – Only those barcodes are added that do not have an unambiguous type and value.

  8. Select from other options. They are described in detail here.

  9. Click Preview and Analysis. The Preview Barcode Detection dialog is displayed.

  10. Click and select a test image that is typical of the documents to be processed.

  11. Optional: Click Area and use your mouse to specify a search area on the image.

  12. Click Analysis. The Searching for barcodes dialog is displayed.

You can at any time do the following:

    • Click Barcodes to adjust which barcodes are searched for.

    • Click Area to adjust the search area using your mouse.

    • Click Continue if barcodes that are present on the test document are still not found.

  13. Click OK to view detailed results in the Preview Barcode Detection dialog.

  14. In the Accept column you can once again narrow down which barcodes to add to the media.

  15. Click OK.

These settings are saved in the parameter set (the process step that you are configuring). If there are discrepancies compared to what you already selected in the parameter set, you will be prompted to append or overwrite those settings – or cancel the changes.

  16. Click OK.

  17. Save the process by clicking the Save button:
